Biden Signs Military Aid Legislation, Sending Weapons to Ukraine and Israel; TikTok’s CEO Reacts to Potential Ban in US
On Wednesday, President Joe Biden signed into law a measure approved by the Senate the previous day. This bill provides military aid to several countries, including Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region, including Taiwan. In addition to the aid package, which includes $60 billion for Ukraine and $26.4 billion for Israel, the legislation requires Chinese tech giant ByteDance to sell the social media app TikTok within a year in order to avoid a ban in the country.
Immediately following the signing of the law, Biden announced that the United States would begin sending air defense ammunition, artillery for rocket systems, and armored vehicles to Ukraine. Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed that the first weapons package worth $1 billion had been shipped, consisting of air defense missiles, armored vehicles, and anti-tank weapons. In response to the ultimatum to sell TikTok, China reiterated its previous stance and accused the US of using intimidation tactics.
TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew released a statement in a video saying that the company would appeal the US government’s decision and was confident of a positive outcome.
