Designing Security: The E2EE Complement

Balancing Privacy and Security: The Controversy Surrounding End-to-End Encryption in Messaging Apps

As a journalist, I rewrite the article as follows:

Communication security is crucial in today’s world, and it can be achieved through encryption. Applications like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to provide privacy for their users. A security by design approach, which emphasizes considering security from the beginning of a project to make systems more robust and secure, is also essential.

Some companies believe that security by design is vital for the future of applications. Despite its importance, it is currently unprofitable. However, E2EE complements security by design by providing a high level of security and privacy for users. However, it can limit visibility in certain investigations such as those related to criminal activities like terrorism or drug trafficking.

Messaging apps that use E2EE have faced criticism from authorities for making it difficult to access user communications during investigations. The European Union and the United Kingdom have questioned the use of E2EE due to concerns about potential misuse by criminals or terrorists. Some authorities have urged technology companies to opt for a security-by-design approach instead of E2EE to facilitate investigations.

In conclusion, both security by design and E2EE are important in enhancing communication security and privacy. While E2EE protects the content of messages exchanged between users, security by design ensures that security measures are incorporated into applications from the beginning. Balancing the need for privacy with the requirements of law enforcement remains a challenge in today’s evolving landscape of communication security.
