TIME100 Health: Pam Cheng, A Leader in Health

AstraZeneca’s Pam Cheng Leads the Way in Sustainability in Pharmaceutical Industry

As a journalist, I have rewritten the article to make it more unique and engaging.

The pharmaceutical industry has long been criticized for its heavy reliance on fossil fuels, which has led to significant environmental impact. From research labs and manufacturing facilities to transportation of products, the industry has left a large footprint on the planet. However, Pam Cheng, executive vice president of operations and IT at AstraZeneca, is determined to change that narrative.

Cheng, who is also the company’s chief sustainability officer, believes that environmental responsibility is crucial in the healthcare sector. She recognizes that a healthy planet is essential for promoting overall well-being and there is a clear connection between human health and environmental health. Since joining AstraZeneca in 2015, Cheng has spearheaded efforts to make the company a leader in sustainability within the pharmaceutical industry.

One of Cheng’s major achievements is AstraZeneca’s participation in the Science-Based Target Initiative, where it was one of the first seven global companies to have its greenhouse gas emissions targets verified. The company has also launched an ambitious $1 billion Ambition Zero Carbon program aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. AstraZeneca has already achieved a 68% reduction in emissions and aims to reach 98% by 2025 with plans to transition its entire vehicle fleet to electric by 2026.

Cheng has also implemented innovative solutions at AstraZeneca such as converting one of its manufacturing plants to biomethane, a renewable energy source made from food and farm waste. This investment in anaerobic digestion plants demonstrates a commitment to a circular economy where waste is reused and recycled, minimizing environmental impact. Cheng’s dedication towards driving both the health of people and the health of the planet through her work at AstraZeneca sets an example for other companies within the industry.

Overall, Pam Cheng’s leadership at AstraZeneca represents a shift towards sustainability within the pharmaceutical industry. Her efforts towards reducing carbon emissions and implementing innovative solutions demonstrate that businesses can prioritize environmental responsibility while still maintaining profitability.
