Albany Businesses Join Forces in Fight Against Escalating Wave of Property Crimes

The Albany Police Department (APD) is calling on local business owners to band together in the fight against an escalating wave of property crimes that have affected various Albany businesses. In the first quarter of 2024, there have already been 21 reported burglaries at different locations across the city. One recent incident involved a smash-and-grab at a Dollar General store on Radium Springs Road, where the suspect stole chips and drinks while causing significant damage to the store.

Customers like Bertha Thomas expressed their frustration over the incident, while business owners like Sudha Patel of Quick Buys Food Stores are facing the financial burden of repairs. Patel mentioned that her store has been targeted twice in the last three months, adding to her concerns about the increasing number of burglaries in Albany. In 2023, there were 102 burglaries and 30 robberies, indicating a troubling trend that needs to be addressed urgently.

Lt. Jon Segroves, who leads the APD’s property crime unit, emphasized the importance of using resources like FUSUS systems to combat this year’s crime wave. He advised business owners to take preventative measures such as securing their establishments better and making it less appealing for potential burglars by removing valuable items from their stores or making them harder to access. Segroves also urged community members to report any suspicious activity they observe to local law enforcement so that appropriate action can be taken promptly.

As Albany continues its efforts to combat these challenges, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and take proactive steps towards protecting themselves from property crimes. Follow WALB on social media for updates on this developing situation and other news in South Georgia.
