Age-Friendly Fairbanks: Community Comes Together to Support Older Americans Month

In honor of Older Americans Month, Foundation Health Partners and the Fairbanks North Star Borough are hosting a summit on the theme ‘Age-Friendly Fairbanks’. The goal is to continuously improve on being age-friendly by examining the built environment and social environment, including housing, transportation, access to healthcare, and recreation.

The summit kicks off with a luncheon on Thursday and continues with a full day of activities and demonstrations at the Carlson Center on Friday. The focus will be on healthy and active living for the over-50 community, with various speakers leading workshops on topics such as arthritis and dementia care.

Foundation Health Partners’ Community Partnership Manager, Carol Anthony, emphasized the importance of creating an age-friendly community and how this event highlights the community’s dedication to supporting older adults. “Creating an age-friendly environment requires a multi-faceted approach that takes into account both the physical needs of our aging population as well as their social and emotional wellbeing,” she said.

The level of volunteerism in organizing the summit showcases Fairbanks’ commitment to caring for its aging population. Volunteers from various organizations have worked tirelessly to make sure that everything runs smoothly during the event. “We couldn’t have done it without their help,” said Anthony. “It truly takes a village to support our older adults.”
