Admiral Paparo: Leading the Indo-Pacific Command in a Time of Rising Challenges

Recently, Admiral Samuel Paparo assumed command of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command (Indopacom), where he is tasked with tackling the rising challenges in the region. During his inauguration ceremony held in Hawaii, Paparo strongly condemned China’s intrusive and expansionist claims in the Indo-Pacific, calling them “illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive.” He also updated the definition of the South China Sea as a “grey” zone, including Russia, North Korea, and violent extremist organizations under this category.

In his handover ceremony with outgoing commander John Aquilino, Paparo declared that the command would aim for peaceful resolution of conflicts while being prepared to fight any adversary that poses a threat to peace and security in the region. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized China’s coercive behavior in the Indo-Pacific, highlighting their ability to dominate the area.

With extensive experience in aviation and a distinguished military background, Paparo is well-equipped to lead Indopacom effectively. Previously serving as head of Navy’s Pacific Fleet and driving experiments with unmanned systems, Paparo called for establishing a force of small drones to aid in defending against potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan. Originally from Morton, Pennsylvania and of Italian descent, Paparo has logged thousands of flight hours across various aircraft and will be crucial in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region amidst escalating challenges.

Admiral Samuel Paparo’s appointment marks a pivotal moment in addressing security concerns in the Indo-Pacific region and protecting against potential threats from adversaries.
