Leading health experts join forces to tackle climate change and secure funding for disease prevention initiatives

Unprecedented Health Funding Initiative Tackles Interconnected Impacts of Climate Change, Malnutrition, and Infectious Diseases

In a $300 million partnership, three of the world’s biggest health funders have come together to tackle the interconnected impacts of climate change, malnutrition, infectious diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. The Novo Nordisk Foundation, Wellcome, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced the research collaboration on Monday in Denmark. Each organization will contribute $100 million to the three-year initiative.

The partnership aims to bridge the gap between different areas of research and recognize that health challenges are interconnected. For instance, COVID-19 has shown how obesity can worsen the severity of certain infectious diseases. Climate change-induced extreme weather events can lead to food insecurity, making undernourished children more susceptible to diseases like measles and cholera.

The partners emphasized the importance of advances in nutritional science and understanding the gut microbiome in comprehending the effects of over- and under-nutrition on health and development. The Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has a stake in drugmaker Novo Nordisk, has seen success with its weight-loss drug Wegovy, generating significant funding for initiatives like this one.

With global attention on health waning post-pandemic, the partners stressed the significance of this partnership in addressing market failures and promoting equitable access to medical advancements. The funding will support researchers from low- and middle-income countries, with an openness to collaborating with private, philanthropic, and public partners to achieve their goals.

They highlighted the importance of involving community members in finding effective solutions to pressing challenges. Catherine Kyobutungi, executive director of the African Population and Health Research Center, emphasized the role that local communities play in addressing health issues.
