Unleashing Innovation: How the UAE’s Proactive Approach to Intellectual Property Rights is Driving Economic Growth

In 2023, the UAE registered 3,415 patent applications, representing a 19.5% increase from the previous year and totaling 5,000 patents. The Ministry of Economy has been at the forefront of protecting intellectual property rights and promoting innovation in all sectors.

To achieve this goal, the country has implemented a proactive approach by creating a legislative and regulatory environment that adheres to international best practices. Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, highlighted the importance of intellectual property protection as a key component of sustainable development in all sectors.

The Ministry has enacted three laws to regulate industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights. Additionally, they have launched 11 initiatives to support intellectual property applications. These measures have contributed to an environment that fosters innovation and intellectual property activities in the UAE.

To further raise awareness about national laws related to intellectual works, the Ministry is organizing a series of seminars, workshops, and competitions from April 22 to 30 for World Intellectual Property Day. The focus of this year’s celebration is on how innovation, creativity, and pioneering projects can help achieve the goals of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision by positioning the UAE as a global hub for economic growth and sustainability.
