Three Mapuches radicalized by the murder of the police targeted and detained

Three Suspects Arrested in Major Breakthrough of Chile Police Officer Murders Case

A major breakthrough was made in the investigation of the murders of three police officers in southern Chile, as three suspects were arrested on Sunday in the area where the massacre occurred on Saturday. This incident was the worst in recent history for the Carabineros and has shocked the country. The suspects’ identities were not reported, but investigations are focusing on radicalized Mapuche sectors as the alleged perpetrators of the crime.

President Gabriel Boric has condemned the attack as a “terrorist act” and vowed to use all legal tools to ensure that those responsible receive a maximum sentence. The town of Cañete, where the massacre took place, is located about 500 kilometers south of Santiago and was celebrating its 97th anniversary at the time of the attack.

In addition to this attack, there has been a strong security crisis in Chile due to frequent clashes between violent sectors of the Mapuche community and state forces over land ownership issues. This long-standing conflict has led to numerous incidents involving violence and human rights abuses.

To address this issue, President Boric has called for dialogue with Indigenous communities to find a peaceful solution to conflicts over land ownership. In addition, he has announced plans to establish a Truth Commission to investigate human rights abuses committed during previous conflicts with Indigenous communities.

The Minister of Interior, Carolina Tohá, also expressed her condolences for the victims and called for justice to be served. She emphasized that law enforcement agencies will continue working tirelessly to bring those responsible for this heinous crime to justice.

Meanwhile, calls for resignation have intensified against Ricardo Yáñez, head of Carabineros after his leadership role during several violent incidents involving Indigenous communities in recent years. However, no decision regarding his position has been made yet by government officials.
