Shouldn’t a professional business require employees to hide tattoos?

The New Normal: Tattoos and Unwanted Advances in Public Spaces: Advice from Miss Manners

My granddaughter, who is 27 years old, has a different perspective on what it means to be a young professional. She believes that most of her peers have tattoos and don’t hide them at work. She’s wondering if this is the new norm, as she thought legitimate businesses required employees to cover up their tattoos. Miss Manners thinks that if the tattoos are not offensive and employers are okay with them, there’s no need to get involved. She suggests thinking of tattoos as a way to see that this generation loves their mothers and butterflies.

On the other hand, another reader is seeking advice on how to respond when unfamiliar men approach her in public and ask about her height. These men often make assumptions about her height without waiting for her answer. Miss Manners suggests responding with humor by saying something like, “5-foot-10, you say? Weird. So am I.”
