The FIDE World School Chess Championship 2024: An Unforgettable Beginning in Callao, Peru

The FIDE World School Chess Championship 2024 kicked off on May 1st in the vibrant city of Callao, Peru. A mesmerizing opening ceremony marked the start of this esteemed chess event, which was attended by top Peruvian authorities such as Guido Flores Marchan, president of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), Morgan Niccolo Quero Gaime, minister of education of Peru, and Ciro Castillo Rojo Salas, Regional Governor of Callao.

As part of the ceremony, Dr. Ciro Castillo Rojo Salas and Minister of Education Morgan Quero made the first ceremonial moves on one of the chess boards. The event showcased a dazzling dance performance by a local troupe representing Peru’s diverse regions – from coast to mountains to jungle.

The championship featured six age groups: U7, U9, U11, U13, U15 and U17 with separate events for boys and girls. A total of 1200 chess players from 26 different countries took part in this highly anticipated competition. Each category consisted of 9-round Swiss tournaments.
