The Dangers of Extreme Heat: Protecting Our Health in the Face of Climate Change

In the state of Utah, there is a growing concern over the relationship between heat and health. While air quality-related health issues are well recognized, the dangers of extreme heat are not as commonly acknowledged. As the climate continues to change, it is imperative to pay attention to rising temperatures, both during the day and at night.

During heat waves, emergency rooms typically see an increase in heat-related illnesses. This highlights the importance of understanding the impact of heat on health and taking appropriate precautions to stay safe. However, there is often less awareness about the risks associated with elevated nighttime temperatures. During the day, individuals can escape the heat by seeking refuge in air-conditioned environments such as work, school or stores. But high nighttime temperatures can be more dangerous as individuals are more vulnerable while sleeping, particularly children, the elderly or those with chronic health conditions. When it is too hot at night, the body is not able to recover at a cellular level which can lead to chronic health issues and potentially dangerous outcomes such as strokes.

It is essential to recognize these risks and take proactive steps to protect our health from extreme heat. This includes staying informed about weather forecasts and being aware of potential heatwaves, wearing loose clothing and staying hydrated throughout the day and night, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours and taking breaks in cooler areas when possible.
