In Israel, the Ministry of Health has issued a warning to consumers about the dangers of taking Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s dietary supplement containing red yeast rice. This warning comes after Japan’s health ministry reported a possible link between five deaths and over a hundred hospitalizations due to kidney disease and the consumption of this supplement. Despite not being approved for use in dietary supplements, red yeast rice is widely available in Israel through online retailers.
Last week, Japanese news agency Kyodo News reported that Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s red yeast rice supplement was found to contain puberulic acid, a natural metabolite of blue mold. The plant in Wakayama Prefecture is currently undergoing thorough inspections to identify areas where mold may have grown in the production line.
