Southwest Region’s First Successful Kidney Transplant After Four Years of Preparation: A Triumph of Medical Expertise and Donor Support

Can Tho Central General Hospital successfully performed the first kidney transplant in the Southwest region after four years of preparation. The transplant, which took place on April 25th, was announced by the hospital on May 9th after the patient’s health stabilized.

The recipient of the kidney transplant is a 34-year-old male teacher from Ben Tre who had been suffering from chronic kidney failure for six years and was undergoing medical treatment. The kidney donor was the patient’s brother. Two years ago, the patient visited Can Tho Central General Hospital with end-stage chronic kidney failure and was prescribed hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. He was placed on the kidney transplant waiting list earlier this year after the hospital was recognized by the Ministry of Health for its expertise in kidney transplants.

The first kidney transplant in the Southwest region was performed by doctors at Can Tho Central General Hospital with support from Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. After a five-hour surgery, the patient’s new kidney started functioning as urine appeared when the ureter was connected. The patient’s health stabilized after two weeks of recovery, and he is expected to be discharged from the hospital on May 9th. The donor’s health also recovered well after the transplant.

The cost of the procedure was approximately 270 million VND, sponsored by donors. Dr. Nguyen Phuoc Loc, Head of Nephrology and Urology Department at Can Tho Central General Hospital emphasized that careful preparation and coordination are crucial for a successful outcome of a kidney transplant procedure.
