South Florida Hosts Fleet Week, a Rare Occurrence in Miami
Fleet Week has returned to South Florida, with the U.S. military choosing Miami as its destination this year. The week of events kicked off at the Frost Museum of Science on Sunday, where guests were treated to a free performance by the U.S. Navy Band. Attendees had the opportunity to meet sailors and Marines, as well as witness real K-9 training demonstrations.
Dr. Cassie Freund, the director of science communication at Frost Science, was thrilled about having the Navy in Miami for Fleet Week. She emphasized the significance of their presence in a city located on the ocean and highlighted their important role in the community. The Navy’s participation in demonstrating different types of science was also noted as valuable.
More than 3,000 members of the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard are participating in Fleet Week in South Florida this year. The Navy has brought four of its ships to PortMiami for the event, making it a special occasion for both the military and the local community alike. This is a rare occurrence and it marks an exciting time for Miami residents who have not seen such an event take place here in a long time
