Trey Augustine to Lead Team USA at World Championship representing MSU

Rising Star Trey Augustine: From Big Ten Champs to World Championship Rep for USA Hockey

MSU goalie and Detroit Red Wings prospect Trey Augustine has been added to the USA Hockey roster for the upcoming World Championship, replacing Detroit forward Dylan Larkin due to injury. 19-year-old Augustine is a freshman at MSU, where he started for the Spartans during their first Big Ten Championship and first national tournament appearance in over a decade. During his time with MSU, Augustine posted impressive stats, including three shutouts, a .915 save percentage, and a 2.96 goals-against average. He was recognized for his outstanding play with Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors.

Augustine’s success at MSU was not just limited to his impressive statistics but also included being named Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and earning the Most Valuable Player award from his teammates.

A South Lyon native, Augustine is a product of the USA Hockey Development Program and was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft. The Red Wings are well represented by USA Hockey as Alex Lyon and Jeff Petry are also on the roster for the tournament. Derek Lalonde is head coach of the team while goaltending coach Alex Westlund is on board too. Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA backstopping them to a gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. This past season for MSU, he quickly became a fan favorite due to his spotlight performances such as a 34-save shutout at Ohio State in November, saving 60 out of 64 shots in a win over No. 1 Wisconsin and even tallying an assist in the NCAA Tournament against Western Michigan.

The recognition that Trey Augustine will receive from this opportunity will be significant as he goes from competing for a national title with Michigan State University to representing his country May 10th through May 26th in Ostrava and Prague Czechia during the World Championship tournament with USA Hockey.
