Innovating the South with $300 million

Revitalizing Southern Italy: The Italian Government Launches New ‘Mini Development Contracts’ Initiative for Green Technologies and Biotechnologies

The Italian government has announced a new initiative to boost economic growth in the southern regions through the introduction of ‘Mini development contracts’. This measure, which will be led by the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, aims to encourage medium-sized productive investments ranging from 5 to 20 million euros.

Under this program, businesses of all sizes can access funding of up to 300 million euros for projects that utilize advanced technologies outlined in the new EU STEP regulation. To be eligible, investments must be linked to green technologies, biotechnologies, critical medicines as defined in the EU list, or their components.

The focus of the program will be on supporting the transition to a greener and more digital economy by strengthening local production chains and promoting technological innovation in the Italian industrial landscape. Initially, these contracts will only be available in Southern Regions where they are expected to have a significant impact on revitalizing the economy and attracting new investments.

Minister Urso is confident that this program will provide a critical opportunity for businesses to drive growth and innovation while also contributing to Italy’s overall economic recovery. He emphasized that this tool complements existing measures that support larger investments within the PNRR and is an important step towards creating a more sustainable future for Italy.
