Stephen Ames Successfully Defends Mitsubishi Title on 60th Birthday Bash

Record-breaking Win for Stephen Ames on PGA Tour Champions: A Look at His Impressive Performance

Stephen Ames won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic, marking his eighth victory on the PGA Tour Champions and his record third win in the event. He finished with a 5-under 67 on Sunday to secure the title defense of his previous victory at TPC Sugarloaf in 2017.

Ames started the final round just one stroke behind Paul Broadhurst, but he soon overtook him with two eagles in his last round. Broadhurst, a 58-year-old Englishman, had to settle for a tie for second place with Doug Barron after shooting a 72 in the final round. K.J. Choi and Steven Alker finished at 9 under par, trailing Ames by five strokes.

Despite being originally from Trinidad and Tobago and now a naturalized Canadian citizen, Ames has seen a resurgence in his career on the PGA Tour Champions. In his last 29 starts, he has won six times and established himself as a strong competitor on the over-50 tour. His previous victories include two wins in his first 175 starts and another at TPC Sugarloaf in 2017.

During the final round, Ames started strong with an opening birdie on the par-4 first hole before eagling the par-5 sixth and par-4 13th holes. He also birdied the par-4 14th hole but had bogeys on the par-4 15th and 17th holes. With a final birdie on the par-5 18th hole, he secured a four-stroke victory and successfully defended his title at TPC Sugarloaf.

Overall, Stephen Ames’ impressive performance at The Mitsubishi Electric Classic highlights his continued success as an over-50 golfer on the PGA Tour Champions.
