Protests on Campuses: From Columbia University to Europe and Beyond

Protests have been taking place on campuses all across the United States, much like the protest camps at Columbia University. Now, these protests have reached Europe as well. In Germany, the police dispersed a demonstration that took place in front of the Bundestag, according to an Al Jazeera report. Meanwhile, in France, pro-Palestinian students blocked the entrance to the Science Institute in Paris.

In light of these pro-Palestinian demonstrations in the US, a Pew Institute survey published this week has shed some light on how Americans feel about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Only 29% of Americans said that resolving this conflict should be a high priority for the administration, compared to 73% who said that preventing terrorism should be a top priority, and 64% who want drug smuggling prevention to be a high priority. Additionally, 63% of Americans said that preventing weapons proliferation should also be a high priority. However, when asked what was more important than resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Americans listed maintaining power gaps, dealing with epidemics and North Korea and Iran as more pressing issues.
