Overcoming Human Resource Shortages: The Key to Vietnam’s Growing Semiconductor Industry

At a conference on the growth of Vietnam’s semiconductor chip industry, experts discussed the critical issue of human resources shortages in the sector. Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat emphasized that Vietnam has immense potential to thrive in the semiconductor industry ecosystem and has attracted numerous major corporations in this field. However, the lack of skilled personnel remains a significant challenge that needs urgent attention.

Associate Professor Dr. Truong Viet Anh highlighted the importance of investing in training programs for engineers to overcome this shortage. He pointed out that rapid changes in market demand, limited investment in science and technology, and high costs for hardware engineering training are some of the challenges associated with this shortage. To address these issues, Anh suggested focusing on core technology research and development to meet the requirements of the semiconductor industry.

Dr. Pham Tran Vu also emphasized the need to train Vietnamese engineers at all stages of IC design to fully participate in the global semiconductor supply chain. He predicted that by 2030, there will be a need for 15,000 engineers for IC design and 35,000 workers in production and packaging stages. To achieve these goals, Vu urged developing training programs, laboratories, and international cooperation to build a team of experienced human resources for the semiconductor industry.

Minister Huynh Thanh Dat mentioned that his Ministry has implemented several programs and projects aimed at developing microchip human resources as part of its science and technology development strategy until 2030. Microcontroller chip manufacturing is a core technology focus for this strategy, with policy mechanisms put in place to train personnel for advanced microchip hardware design being among its efforts towards preparing for the future development of Vietnam’s semiconductor industry.

Overall, it is clear that addressing human resource shortages is crucial for Vietnam’s continued success as it looks towards further growth in its semiconductor industry ecosystem. With a focus on research and development as well as investment in education and training programs, Vietnam can overcome these challenges and position itself as a leader in this rapidly growing global marketplace.
