Over 48 Killed in Highway Collapse: A Sobering Reminder of China’s Infrastructure Woes
In the southern Chinese province of Canton, a section of a highway collapsed, leading to the death of 48 individuals and injuries to 30 others. The incident occurred around 02:10 local time on Meizhou-Dabu highway where 24 vehicles were trapped. Fortunately, no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals were involved in the accident, according to local officials.
Rescue efforts are currently underway with over 500 people working to free all trapped vehicles and recover the bodies of the victims. The 30 injured individuals have been taken to nearby hospitals and are currently out of danger. Investigations are ongoing into the causes of the collapse, with suspicions that heavy rains in the region in recent days may have played a role.
This tragic event is just one of several infrastructure-related accidents that have occurred in China in recent months. In December, three people died and four were injured when a section of a highway collapsed in Inner Mongolia. The Chinese authorities are working diligently to investigate the cause of this latest collapse and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
