In 2006, I had the opportunity to speak with former President Jimmy Carter. At the time, he was preparing for a trip to Africa to help eradicate Guinea worm disease. During our conversation, I was surprised to see a hint of pride in his eyes. When I expressed my admiration for his dedication at his age, he responded with a humble laugh, saying he didn’t mind hearing such compliments.
Fast forward to today, and Carter is every reason to be proud. In 1986, the Carter Center launched a program to eradicate Guinea worm disease. At that time, the parasitic disease affected 3.5 million people per year in 21 countries. However, thanks to Carter’s leadership and commitment, last year saw only 14 reported cases worldwide. The Carter Center’s efforts have focused on public education, teaching people in affected countries to filter drinking water and prevent infected individuals from contaminating water sources.
The ultimate goal of the Carter Center is to make Guinea worm the second human disease, after smallpox, to be eradicated. As he prepares to turn 100 on October 1st, Carter is determined to witness this achievement. As the oldest living former U.S. President, Carter’s dedication to this cause is truly inspiring.
It’s interesting how much progress has been made since then-octogenarian Jimmy Carter allowed a glimpse of pride during our conversation in 2006. With only 14 reported cases of Guinea worm disease worldwide last year thanks to his leadership and commitment through the Carter Center’s efforts towards public education and prevention measures.
Jimmy Carter has every reason to be proud as he sets out on his journey towards turning 100 years old on October 1st while continuing his fight towards making Guinea worm the second human disease after smallpox
