Japan’s Plan to Address Shortage of Skilled Workers

Japan’s Unique Approach to Overcoming Labor Shortage in STEM: A Focus on Vocational Education and International Partnerships.

Japan stands out as having the best structured technical training in Asia, with its focus on vocational education and strong ties between schools and companies. Despite not leading in international comparisons for graduates of natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering studies, Japan’s emphasis on monozukuri (making things) sets it apart. The country is currently facing a labor shortage due to its shrinking population, with around 600,000 people lost each year soon reaching a million.

Japan has an advantage over its neighbors in addressing this issue as it is Asia’s oldest industrial nation. The government has been working on enhancing STEM training under the “Society 5.0” initiative since 2016, with increased funding programs in 2021. The country’s early emphasis on mathematics and manual skills provides a solid foundation for vocational education.

To address the labor shortage, the government is working on attracting foreign skilled workers with new visa regulations and partnering with foreign manufacturers to introduce dual training programs. This will help to bridge the gap between traditional education systems and new demands and maintain Japan’s competitive edge in the global economy.

Challenges remain as innovation rankings slip and more women are needed in STEM fields. Japan is working towards systemic reforms to promote invention in education and attract more women to these areas. With more room than others to increase female participation in STEM fields, Japan is aiming to maintain its competitive edge in the global economy while also addressing labor shortages.
