Israel’s Invasion of Rafah: The Violent Escalation of Gaza Conflict and Its Human Cost
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Wednesday that they have killed approximately 30 alleged “terrorists” since the start of the invasion of the city of Rafah. The attack began with the seizure of the Palestinian side of the border crossing, one of the few avenues for humanitarian aid that remained.
In a statement, the IDF stated that they had reached Rafah and attacked the area, surrounding the crossing and taking control of it. They emphasized that they would remain in the area as long as necessary to carry out their mission. The invasion came after weeks of threats from Israel despite warnings from international leaders about its potential catastrophic consequences on nearly 1.4 million people trapped in the area.
On Tuesday, Benjamin Netanyahu’s government decided to proceed with an invasion, even though Hamas had reportedly accepted a ceasefire proposal from Qatar and Egypt just one day before. The escalation has raised tensions in the region and concerns about its humanitarian impact on civilians.
