Israel’s Army Appoints New Director, Announces New Staff Appointments Amidst Political Uncertainty Over Gaza Conflict

After the resignation of Director Aharon Haliva, General Schlomi Binder has been named as his successor by Israel’s army. The previous director resigned about a week and a half ago in order to fulfill his leadership responsibilities following the Hamas massacre on October 7th.

In addition to General Binder’s appointment, Israel’s military also announced new appointments in the General Staff on Thursday. These appointments were the result of a process led by Israel’s defense minister Joav Galant and Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi. However, some Israeli MPs have criticized the new appointments, stating that they are eager to see an end to the conflict in Gaza.

There are concerns that the new appointments could deepen the rift between political leadership and the security establishment in Israel. Reports indicate that there is growing dissatisfaction within the army over the government’s lack of a future plan for the Gaza Strip.
