ICJ Urgently Orders Israel to Provide Humanitarian Aid to Gaza in Conflict with Hamas

ICJ Declares Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza as Famine Sets In: Calls for Urgent Action to Aid the Population

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a ruling on Thursday that there is a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory, with famine setting in. In an order published on its website, the ICJ ordered Israel to provide urgent humanitarian aid to Gaza and fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide by ensuring basic services and assistance are provided without delay.

The ICJ also recommended that aid should be delivered by increasing the capacity and number of land crossing points and keeping them open as long as necessary. South Africa filed a new request before the ICJ expressing concern over the massacres, injuries, and large-scale destruction caused by Israel’s ground military offensive in Rafah.

The situation in Gaza has led to widespread famine among the population, with 100% of the inhabitants facing serious food insecurity. Despite strict control over humanitarian aid by land, some countries are parachuting supplies into Gaza to address this growing crisis. However, enforcing these orders remains a challenge as it has no means of doing so. The international community must come together to address this crisis and ensure that basic services are provided urgently to those who need them most.
