Hyde’s Dream Realized: The Opening of the Southern Arizona Museum of Science and Technology

In late 2023, Ron Hyde’s dream of a history museum in Sierra Vista finally became a reality. As the curator of the Southern Arizona Museum of Science and Technology, Hyde spent over 40 facilities searching for the perfect location for the museum. He found his ideal spot by teaming up with Roger Weller, a former geology professor at Cochise College and member of the Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club.

The goal of the new museum is to showcase the rich history of Cochise County, filled with beautiful minerals, fossils, and natural history. Hyde and Weller hope to educate visitors about STEM topics while also boosting the local economy through tourism. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with suggested donation rates for admission.

Blake Phillips, a reporter for KGUN 9 who grew up in Sierra Vista, is excited to share this news with his community. Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Phillips studied journalism at the Missouri School of Journalism before working for the NBC affiliate in Columbia before returning home to Sierra Vista where he has a passion for giving back to his community by encouraging people to share their stories and important issues with him via email.
