House Democrats Stand by Speaker Mike Johnson and Oppose Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Attempt to Remove him

House Democratic leaders have decided not to support Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s proposal to remove Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson. Following a meeting among Democratic lawmakers on April 30, party leader Hakeem Jeffries announced that they would stand by Johnson and oppose any attempts to unseat him.

Despite Greene’s threats to submit a motion to remove the Speaker if he allowed the passage of a Ukraine aid bill, the Democrats are confident that her proposal will fail. They plan to protect Johnson against any overthrow attempts and are committed to working with traditional Republicans on bipartisan solutions.

The Democrats in the House aim to prioritize the needs of the people and resist MAGA extremism, as mentioned by Mr. Jeffries in reference to President Trump’s former slogan “Make America Great Again.” Mike Johnson, who was elected as the 56th Speaker of the US House of Representatives in October 2023, requires at least 218 votes in favor to retain his position. With the Republican Party holding 217 seats and the Democrats holding 212, Johnson’s removal seems unlikely as only two lawmakers support Greene’s views.

Johnson emphasized the importance of fulfilling his duties and passing bills for the benefit of the country.
