Glaucoma Management: How Technology is Revolutionizing the Way We Control IOP and Improve Patient Quality of Life with Dr. Melissa Tawa
Dr. Melissa Tawa, OD, FAAO, was a featured participant in two glaucoma panels at the Controversies in Modern Eye Care meeting on May 4th, 2024. During one panel, she reviewed case studies of glaucoma and discussed surgical interventions for appropriate patient populations and technologies. In the other panel, Dr. Tawa shared pearls of wisdom and insights from her discussions on managing glaucoma patients with OCT and visual field interpretation, corneal hysteresis and improving patient quality of life.
Dr. Tawa emphasized the importance of controlling glaucoma while also considering the impact of medications and procedures on patients’ daily lives. She discussed strategies to alleviate drop burden by managing corneal hysteresis and improving visual field interpretation through OCT. In addition to this, she highlighted the need for technologies like Durysta and iDose TR to reduce the need for medications in glaucoma patients. She also explored minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) as an alternative to topical medications to improve patient compliance and reduce drop burden.
This shift towards alternative methods of controlling IOP represents a step towards enhancing patient care and quality of life. Through her expertise in glaucoma management, Dr. Tawa demonstrated how technology can play a key role in improving outcomes for patients with this disease while also improving their overall quality of life.
