Getting Lost and Finding Unity: The Magical World of Labyrinths and How to Celebrate it on World Labyrinth Day in Greenfield

In May 2022, Maggie Sweeney from Greenfield was captured in a photo while weeding the labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew. This year, on the first Saturday of May, people around the world will come together to celebrate World Labyrinth Day, an event organized by The Labyrinth Society. The labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew, located at 8 Church Street in Greenfield, will be the site of this year’s event.

Labyrinths have been found throughout history and are said to symbolize unity, peace, and spiritual growth. The Friends of the Community Labyrinth, a group involved in constructing the labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew in 2019, believe that their popularity will foster a sense of peace and understanding among communities. Elise Schlaikjer, one of the co-founders of the Friends of the Community Labyrinth encourages participants to embrace getting lost within its paths as it fosters a feeling of being at home and unafraid.

For those interested in participating in this year’s “Walk as One” event on World Labyrinth Day, it will serve as an opportunity for individuals to walk the labyrinth in unison as they reflect on their shared global appreciation for this ancient practice.
