German Navy Weighs Procurement of Israeli Drones as Lufthansa Enters UAV Maintenance Market

The German Navy is reportedly considering purchasing the Hermes 900 UAV from Israeli company Elbit, according to a statement by the Israel Defense website. Meanwhile, German airline Lufthansa has announced a partnership with Elbit Systems to provide military drones through its subsidiary Lufthansa Technik. Elbit has not commented on this collaboration. Back in January 2023, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Lufthansa Technik and Elbit Systems, although no official contract has been finalized yet.

According to reports, the German Navy is looking to secure a deal for the supply and maintenance of eight Hermes 900 StarLiner UAVs. Lufthansa Technik will handle maintenance and crew training responsibilities, while Elbit will produce the drones. The financial details of the contract have not been disclosed. This marks Lufthansa Technik’s first venture into UAV maintenance, having previously supported NATO aircraft fleets such as F-35 fighter jets, Chinook transport helicopters, and Poseidon reconnaissance aircraft.
