Valley Times-News highlights standout student from J.P. Powell at regional science fair

From Third Place to Broadcom Masters: Tyler Broussard’s Journey in Science and Engineering

Tyler Broussard, a 14-year-old student at East John P. Powell Magnet School, has recently achieved remarkable success in the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GREASF). She won third place in the competition held on February 23rd, 2024. As a result of her impressive performance, Tyler advanced to the Alabama Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF), where she competed in the junior division for middle schoolers in grades 6th-8th.

Tyler’s project titled “Lights On” caught the attention of judges and earned her recognition as a recipient of the Broadcom Award for Coding with Commitment. This accolade came with an impressive prize package that included a $250 gift card and a Raspberry Pi kit. The award was also a testament to her commitment to coding and dedication to excellence in science and engineering.

Tyler’s outstanding performance at ASEF earned her a nomination among the top ten percent of participants from ASEF. Her success has now propelled her into the prestigious Broadcom Masters 2024 competition, where she will compete against approximately three hundred other students from across the country for entry. Broadcom Masters is a national science competition organized by the Society for Science that recognizes exceptional talent and achievement in U.S. middle schools.

Throughout her journey, Tyler has received unwavering guidance from Dr. Vickie Benson, her Physical Science teacher and K-8 STEAM Specialist at East John P. Powell Magnet School. Dr. Benson’s support has been instrumental in helping Tyler hone her skills and excel in competitive science fairs.
