Xu, an aspiring nuclear physicist, faced rejection by the School of Physics after viral posts of him torturing and killing cats in his dorm room circulated online. The university’s admissions guidelines consider moral and political qualifications, and failure to meet these criteria can result in rejection.
According to a school official, Xu’s behavior was taken seriously, and his actions likely influenced the admission decision. In March, Xu came under fire on social media for sharing videos of himself abusing cats in his dorm room. One video depicted him placing a cat in a bucket and repeatedly trampling on its head.
The police in Nanjing investigated the incident, but no punishment was imposed despite education provided to Xu and involvement of his parents. Despite this, Xu expressed remorse and wrote a letter of apology vowing not to repeat his actions.
After being rejected by Nanjing University, Xu applied to Lanzhou University in northwestern China and was granted an interview. However, he declined to speak with a mainland news outlet due to concerns about public opinion. The case has sparked a debate about ethics, animal welfare, and the importance of talent in the academic field.
While some believe that severe consequences should be faced for such actions, others argue that nurturing a science researcher is more important than treating a cat humanely. This incident highlights the importance of considering moral qualifications when evaluating applicants for academic programs.
