Fortum’s investment in a hydrogen test facility in Loviisa: Testing two different technologies in pilot project

Fortum’s New Hydrogen Test Facility: A Step Towards Greener Energy Sources

Fortum, a leading energy company, is investing in a new hydrogen test facility that will be built next to the Loviisa nuclear power plant in Finland. The project is worth 17 million euros and will be financed entirely from Fortum’s research and development funds. The construction of the facility is set to begin this summer, with an expected completion date of the end of 2025.

The pilot plant will use two different hydrogen production technologies, including alkali technology and PEM technology. By conducting the pilot project mainly in-house, Fortum aims to gain knowledge about hydrogen production technology, operation, maintenance, and safety. This information will help Fortum evaluate its potential for large-scale production of clean hydrogen.

Hydrogen production is critical for transitioning to greener energy sources as it can replace fossil hydrocarbons. Fortum’s strategy includes research on small-scale projects related to hydrogen technology in Nordic countries. Additionally, the company is exploring potential investments in small modular nuclear reactors as part of its core business activities.

Sipila explains that the pilot plant in Loviisa will be operational for approximately two years, allowing Fortum to evaluate the business opportunities surrounding green hydrogen and its derivatives. The goal of this evaluation is to understand not only the technical aspects of hydrogen production but also market dynamics.

Fortum is considering its role in the entire hydrogen value chain as a producer or partner in downstream activities. The company’s strategy for hydrogen technology may be updated after 2028 based on market conditions and evolving business opportunities.

Ultimately, Fortum aims to position itself strategically in the growing market for clean hydrogen and its derivatives by gaining knowledge about all aspects of this innovative technology.
