Voting in elections by mobile phone will be permitted in Estonia

Estonia Leads the Way in Online Voting: Latest Proposed Law and its Future Implications for E-Governance

Estonia, a country known for its digital innovation, has been leading the way in online voting since 2005. The latest proposed law on electronic voting will allow citizens to cast their votes through special applications on mobile devices in addition to computers. However, this change will not take effect until October and cannot be used in the upcoming European Parliament elections in June.

The election commission will determine the technical conditions before each election, ensuring that e-voting is conducted securely and reliably. Despite concerns about the reliability of online voting, Estonia’s experience with digitization and e-governance has set it apart as a pioneer in Europe. Over half of all votes in the March 2023 parliamentary elections in Estonia were cast digitally, showcasing the country’s commitment to digitization and e-government.

The success of online voting in Estonia reflects a shift in citizens’ behavior towards smart devices and convenience. The new law aims to make e-Estonia accessible on these platforms, allowing citizens to conduct almost all transactions online in their daily lives. This change is just another step forward for Estonia’s digital agenda and its vision for a smarter future.
