One-of-a-Kind Science and Conservation School Receives Conservation Grant from Disney

Disney Conservation Fund Tackles Environmental Challenge at SCICON Outdoor School in Tulare County, California

In the foothills of Tulare County, California, SCICON stands tall as an outdoor school that imparts the significance of science and conservation to its students. The Tulare Office of Education operates this magical place, which welcomes over 8,000 fifth and sixth graders each year. Dianne Shew, the director of SCICON, describes it as a unique learning environment where students can immerse themselves in nature and develop respect for themselves and others.

Covering 1,170 acres and nestled adjacent to National Forest land, SCICON presents a plethora of opportunities for its students to explore the great outdoors through hikes of varying difficulties, lessons on aquatic life, and visits to a museum showcasing local flora and fauna. One student, Gavin, cherishes the fresh mountain air and understands the impact of human actions on the environment.

In early 2023, SCICON faced unprecedented challenges due to severe flooding caused by historic rains in California. The flooding posed a threat to the delicate salamander habitat on-site. To mitigate this crisis, Disney Conservation Fund provided a grant to Friends of SCICON organization. Disney’s “VoluntEARS” took part in habitat restoration efforts by removing debris left behind by the flooding. The grant will assist in restoring salamander habitat while educating students about conservation efforts.

Dianne Shew believes that instilling a sense of environmental responsibility in students is vital for their future well-being and for preserving our planet. By encouraging children to take small steps towards protecting Mother Earth every day at home or school, SCICON aims to make a lasting positive impact on our planet’s health. Disney supports these efforts wholeheartedly as it aligns with their mission to protect our earth while inspiring individuals around the world to take action towards sustainability.

SCICON offers an immersive experience that combines education with adventure in one breathtaking location. Through its innovative programs and initiatives backed by renowned organizations like Disney Conservation Fund and Friends of SCICON, this outdoor school continues to inspire future generations with its unwavering commitment towards environmental conservation.
