Exploring the Globe: A Night of Math and Science Around the World

Discovering the Wonders of STEAM: A Global Adventure for Families at Klager Elementary School’s Around the World with Math and Science Night

On April 26, Klager Elementary School hosted the Around the World with Math and Science Night, which was a huge success. The event was coordinated by a team of passionate volunteers from Klager and high schools who provided families with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) learning opportunities in the school’s cafeteria.

Children had the opportunity to learn about science from different cultures around the world. They explored topics such as the science of growing food in the Arctic, the discovery of popcorn in Peru, and the invention of sorbet in China. They also got to engage with technology through robotics demonstrations by Klager K-12 robotics teams. In addition to this, they practiced their engineering skills with K’Nex, an invention from the United States.

Families were treated to an art show and children had fun creating notebooks, a product originally from Australia as a make-and-take activity. Children also applied their math skills through a game challenge called Mancala, which was created in Africa. Title 1 representatives were on hand to promote reading local Michigan authors and products while MI Future Funds provided information on college planning and savings. At the end of the night, children voted for their favorite station and it was a tie between Robotics Teams and Mancala Challenge stations that won.

Overall, families of all ages had a great time at this event that was both interactive and engaging. It was an excellent opportunity for children to explore different cultures and learn about various aspects of STEAM education.
