Police use technology to enhance investigation into Olly Stephens’ murder

Digital Forensics Investigation Leads to Groundbreaking Advancements in Extracting Evidence from Digital Data

In the investigation into the murder of 13-year-old Olly Stephens, advancements in technology played a crucial role, according to Det Supt Andy Howard of Thames Valley Police. The murder occurred in January 2021 in a field in Reading, Berkshire. Olly was fatally stabbed and the motive for his murder was that his killers believed he had informed the brother of a boy they had mocked in a social media group chat. A girl was also found guilty of Olly’s manslaughter but none of the perpetrators can be named due to legal reasons.

The discovery of voice notes and text messages by the police revealed the boys’ intentions of seeking revenge. Mr. Howard highlighted the importance of technological advancements in accessing digital messages which significantly contributed to the investigation. He appeared in a Channel 4 documentary discussing the role of Thames Valley Police’s digital forensics unit in the case. The ability to extract valuable information from digital data eliminated the need to call young witnesses to testify in court.

The investigation quickly determined that key evidence lay in mobile phones, digital data, and social media content of suspects and thanks to these technological tools, police were able to unravel Olly’s tragic death without relying solely on witness testimonies. According to Det Supt Howard, if the murder had occurred months earlier, their approach would have been different due to advancements made in technology since then which allowed them accessing crucial information through digital forensics investigations that could not have been done otherwise
