Dexter High School Launches Music Technology Course to Boost 21st Century Skills

Dexter High School is set to introduce a new course that aligns with its strategic plan of preparing students for the 21st century by integrating technology into education. The course, called Music Technology, aims to foster creativity, critical thinking, and technological proficiency among students, ensuring they acquire skills that are relevant to modern industries.

The idea for the Music Technology course was proposed by Grace Wolfe, the Director of Bands at DHS. It was approved at the April 29 meeting by the school board. Wolfe explained that the course will provide students with skills necessary for modern music production and technology-driven music industries. It will allow students to explore creativity through digital tools and gain a deeper understanding of music beyond traditional methods, preparing them for diverse career opportunities in the field.

The semester-long class will be open to students with varying musical backgrounds, experience levels, and interests. Students will have the opportunity to learn about various software, technologies, and musical devices, as well as live sampling to unleash their creativity in a hands-on environment. The course will emphasize core concepts such as digital audio production, sound design, music software proficiency, electronic composition, MIDI sequencing, and an understanding of emerging technologies in the music industry.

Dexter Community Schools Board of Education President Mara Greaterox expressed excitement about the new course. She emphasized that it will be a valuable opportunity for music program students and those who want to be involved in the program but may not want to play an instrument. The Music Technology course will be introduced in the upcoming school year, providing students with an innovative and engaging educational experience.
