China Warns US: Increased Military Support for Taiwan Could Lead to Conflict in Taiwan Strait

On Wednesday, China issued a stern warning to the US government, stating that any increase in military support for Taiwan would escalate tensions and increase the risk of conflict across the Taiwan Strait. This warning came after the US Congress approved an eight billion dollar aid package for Taiwan, which was welcomed by Taiwan’s President-elect Lai Ching-te as a way to enhance deterrence against tyranny and authoritarianism.

As US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken prepares for talks with Chinese leaders in Beijing, the focus is expected to be on addressing deep differences over security, trade, and international relations. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin has emphasized that strengthening military relations between the US and Taiwan would not bring security to Taiwan but would only lead to negative consequences.

Blinken’s visit aims to calm tensions between the world’s top two economic powers and explore areas of cooperation while managing competition effectively. In addition to political discussions, Blinken will meet with students and industry leaders in Shanghai to demonstrate friendly relations between the US and China.

China claims sovereignty over Taiwan and has vowed to take firm measures to protect its territorial integrity. However, Taiwan sees itself as a separate country from China and believes it should be able to defend itself without outside interference. The issue remains highly contentious, with both sides continuing to engage in diplomatic efforts aimed at finding common ground amid strategic differences.
