Students from Wyoming compete at National Science Bowl in Washington, DC

Casper Teams Take on the Nation in Science Bowl Competition: Wyoming High School and Middle School Teams Compete for Top Prizes at National Finals

In 2024, students from Kelly Walsh High School and CY Middle School represented Wyoming in the National Science Bowl Championship held in Washington. This marked the fifth consecutive year that Kelly Walsh High School won first place as the Wyoming Regional High School Science Bowl champion. The KW Science Club holds mock science bowls throughout the year to prepare for competitions. Part of the fun is learning how to quickly respond to questions and using strategic critical thinking skills to avoid making mistakes on the spot, said Natrona County school district.

CY Middle School students are part of the school’s STEM Club, which explores advanced scientific knowledge and competes in Science Olympiad competitions each year. From January to March, 115 regional high school and middle school teams competed for a chance to attend the National Finals. Unfortunately, Casper’s teams were eliminated before the finals.

The Department of Energy Office of Science Acting Director, Dr. Harriet Kung, expressed excitement at the start of the 34th National Science Bowl Finals. She noted that the event brings together some of the brightest young minds in the nation, showcasing the future of science and innovation. The top two middle and high school teams will earn $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments, while other schools placing in the top 16 will receive $1,000 for their departments.
