Business Owners Concerned as Property Crimes on the Rise in DOCO

Business Owners and Victims Urged to Speak Out Against Release of Criminals with Property Crime Arrests in Dougherty County

District Attorney Greg Edwards from Dougherty County has recently addressed the concerns raised by business owners regarding the threat posed by individuals who have been arrested and released on bond for property crimes. According to Edwards, some of the common crimes that businesses are experiencing more frequently include burglary and damage to property.

One possible cause for this increase in crime could be a policy implemented at the magistrate court level, which allows individuals arrested for misdemeanor offenses, particularly theft, to be reconsidered for release on their own recognizance (OR) if they are unable to make bond and remain in jail for 10 days. Edwards emphasizes the importance of prevention measures in order to protect businesses in the area.

To address this issue, Edwards calls on business owners and victims to speak out and inform the court about the impact these crimes have on their interests. He has received complaints from both sides of Albany, and he is concerned that if the situation continues, businesses may not want to remain in the area.

Edwards encourages business owners to take steps to prevent crime, such as installing security cameras and alarms, locking doors and windows when not in use, and being vigilant about who they allow into their properties. He also advises victims of property crimes to report them to law enforcement immediately so that appropriate action can be taken.
