Events on Black Maternal Health highlight disparities in healthcare access

Breaking Barriers: Penn State Health Tackles Disparities in Black Maternal Health with Community Events”.

In order to shed light on the critical issue of maternal mortality, Penn State Health recently observed Black Maternal Health Week from April 11 to 17. Sponsored by Highmark, a series of educational events were held both in the community and on the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus. The aim of these events was to raise awareness about the disparities in healthcare that have disproportionately impacted Black women.

The community events included a focus on maternal heart health, as well as a Grand Rounds presentation by Pennsylvania Rep. Morgan Cephas, who is also the co-chair of the Pennsylvania Black Maternal Health Caucus. These events showcased the commitment and efforts being made to improve maternal health outcomes for women, particularly those facing barriers in accessing quality healthcare.

Through these events, attendees were able to learn about the challenges facing Black women in maternal health and what steps can be taken to address and improve these disparities. The shared commitment to improving maternal health care for all women was evident throughout the week, as participants engaged in discussions and initiatives to make a positive impact on maternal health outcomes.
