18-year-old freestyle skier Asher Michel from Tabernash, competing as part of the Winter Park Competition Center team, won bronze at the FIS Freestyle Junior World Championships in Italy on April 5. His impressive performance in Valmalenco, Italy earned him third place in the moguls category and fourth place in dual moguls on the following day. These achievements made him the third best freestyle skier in the world for 2024.
Michel had previously won gold in the team dual moguls race at the junior world championships in 2023 and had many other accomplishments throughout the season, including earning gold in dual moguls at Vermont’s Stratton Mountain Resort at the NorAm Cup. His success was judged on criteria such as turns, air, and speed.
Another skier from Winter Park Competition Center, Olivia Maurais, also participated in the world championships, finishing 14th in moguls and rising to seventh in dual moguls. Michel celebrated his success on the podium alongside some of the world’s best skiers. His performance solidified his position as one of the top freestyle skiers in the world.
