Latvia recognized as a leader in promoting women in science and technology within the EU

Women in STEM: Latvia Leads EU in Proportion of Women in Science and Technology Occupations, While Italy Lags Behind”.

The proportion of women working as scientists and engineers varies greatly depending on the industry. In the service sector, 46% of these professionals are women, while in manufacturing, only 22% are.

Latvia stands out as a leader among EU Member States when it comes to the proportion of women employed in science and technology occupations. This includes jobs related to the systematic generation, advancement, diffusion, and application of scientific and technological knowledge, as well as other related fields like technicians or associated professionals.

According to recent data from 2022, the highest shares of women employed in science and technology occupations were observed in Lithuania, Corse in France, and Latvia itself. On the other hand, regions with the smallest proportions of females employed in these fields were found in Nord-Ovest in Italy, Malta, and Sud in Italy.

This data was released to coincide with International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th.
