On Friday, the strange incident at an Oregon football camp came to a conclusion with the resignation of Westview High School coach Jamal Jones. Allegations had been made that Jones had woken up players in the early morning hours of the camp on the Linfield University campus by slapping and shaking them.
In an email sent to parents and reported by Oregonlive.com, WHS principal Matt Pedersen announced Jones’ resignation from the head coaching position effective immediately. The email also mentioned a meeting with the assistant coaching staff and plans for team gatherings, football workouts, and practices in the near future. The school’s goal is to ensure that players and their families feel safe returning to the Westview football program and for student-athletes to look forward to a successful season.
Jones had just started his first year as head coach of the Wildcats after previously coaching at Franklin High School in Portland, Oregon, and Arcata High School in California. In addition to his coaching duties, Jones is currently on leave from his job as a Hillsboro police officer. The story was originally reported on High School Sports.
