Vienna Energy Customers Reap the Benefits of Lower Electricity and Gas Prices

Vienna Energy Customers Receive Lower Prices for Electricity and Gas

Wien Energie, the municipal energy supplier in Vienna, is now offering lower prices for electricity and gas to its customers. The Optima Relaxed tariff has seen a reduction in the price of electricity to 14.9 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) starting in July, while gas is now priced at around 5.9 cents/kWh. This reduction applies to most households whose price guarantee expires in the summer, but not all. Some households will continue to benefit from the price guarantee until April 2025.

The Finance and Economics Councillor of Vienna, Peter Hanke, announced that Wien Energie is investing an additional 50 million euros this year in offers for customers in response to positive market developments. Last year, 340 million euros were already spent on price reductions. Small and medium-sized businesses will also see their electricity and gas tariffs automatically reduced in July, with reductions of up to 56 percent depending on the contract. Household electricity prices may fall by up to 55 percent, while gas prices are now between 7 and 20 percent cheaper than last year.

Furthermore, Wien Energie has extended the electricity price reduction of 14.9 cents/kWh to new customers of Energy Alliance providers EVN and Burgenland Energie. Customers who commit to a further year will receive an additional discount, bringing the consumption price down to around 12.9 cents/kWh. To take advantage of the offer, customers must actively sign up by September 16th through the Wien Energie customer service.

In previous years, Wien Energie mainly offered discounts to customers due to contractual constraints preventing unilateral changes. However, current price reductions are a result of falling indices underlying the contracts, indicating a shift in approach from last year.

While there have been no announcements about additional price adjustments this year for district heating, it is unclear if there will be any further changes.

Last year’s price reductions were implemented in autumn 2023.

Overall, these price reductions are good news for Viennese energy customers who can now enjoy lower rates without having to worry about unforeseen increases or contractual limitations.

It’s important for customers who want to take advantage of these deals
