Venezuelan President’s New Arrests Amidst Controversial Corruption Scandal: Colonel Marino Lugo Found Dead in Cell

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced new arrests related to the corruption network that has led to the arrest of over 54 individuals, including former Ministers of Oil and Economy. One of those arrested was Colonel Marino Lugo, who was found dead in his cell, with authorities suspecting it to be a suicide. The Public Ministry reported that Lugo was found hanging in his cell, and an autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death.

It is not clear when Lugo was detained, but he was wanted in connection with the PDVSA-Cripto case, which has been ongoing for some time now. Lugo was facing charges of various crimes such as embezzlement, money laundering, and association. However, details about the specific charges against him were not disclosed.

The investigation into the corruption scandal continues, with authorities working to hold those involved accountable. Previous arrests in the case had been marred by the deaths of two detainees – one due to suicide and the other due to illness. This latest development is likely to further fuel tensions between Maduro’s government and opposition forces who have been calling for greater transparency and accountability in Venezuela’s oil industry.
