Fatty liver disease is a silent killer that can destroy the body’s vital activities. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience right abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss, which are often overlooked as normal and ignored. The liver, a crucial organ in the body, is invaded by fat due to this disease. Approximately one-third of the adult population carries this uninvited enemy in their bodies without even realizing it.
Fatty liver disease is often asymptomatic, making it difficult to detect and treat in its early stages. Unfortunately, symptoms like right abdominal pain, unexplained fatigue, weight loss, and physical weakness only manifest once the disease has progressed significantly. However, according to the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is often asymptomatic until it is detected during routine health check-ups. When symptoms like jaundice, itching, and swelling appear, urgent medical attention is required.
Blood tests and liver function tests can help identify conditions like hepatitis but may not always detect fatty liver. Additionally, a stomach ultrasound can also reveal the presence of fatty liver. At present, there is no specific medication for treating fatty liver disease. Lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and regular physical exercise can aid in preventing and reversing the condition.
It’s crucial for individuals to keep an eye on their health especially if they are at risk of fatty liver disease. Timely detection and proper management of this potentially life-threatening condition can save lives.
