Understanding the Causes of Numbness in the Limbs: A Comprehensive Guide

Numbness in the limbs is a common condition that can be caused by various reasons. According to Dr. Pham Thi Xuan Thu from the Orthopedic Trauma Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, there are many underlying causes of numbness in the hands and feet. These include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative spine conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and others. Additionally, factors like diabetes, thyroid disorders, Raynaud’s syndrome, and vitamin deficiencies can also contribute to numbness in the limbs.

Initially, the symptoms may be mild and include numbness in the fingertips, tingling, cramps and aches. Over time, the numbness and pain can worsen and spread down the arms and legs making movement difficult. It is important for individuals to address the underlying causes of numbness in their hands and feet to prevent long-term consequences such as loss of function and paralysis.

Dr. Thu emphasized that incorrect posture, accidents or prolonged stress can also lead to numbness in the limbs. She advised that if symptoms persist for more than six weeks it is essential to seek medical attention early detection and treatment can prevent further complications and improve quality of life.

Numbness in the limbs can significantly impact daily life but with proper diagnosis and treatment it is possible to alleviate symptoms and maintain mobility.
